Birthing Positively

I have pleasure in including 4 short videos which show different uses of massage during later pregnancy and labour itself.  All the images are taken from my user-guide, 'Birthing Positively'.  Just click on 'Claire's Book' for more information.

The power of touch cannot be underestimated.  Whilst pregnant, massage encourages a deep sense of relaxation, which can also be felt by baby.  In addition, it serves as a wonderful way for parents to bond with their baby.  Birth partners will also feel they are a valuable asset in the labour environment, knowing that they may offer comfort measures which can be of huge benefit.  It's important for any labouring woman to be as relaxed as possible, enabling her body to do the important work of bringing her baby into this world.

Grounding Stroke

This is of benefit during labour when women sometimes feel as though they are a little 'adrift' or feel that they may be losing some sense of control.  It's a very calming, soothing stroke, culminating in the holding of feet, which encourages the sense of feeling 'grounded'.

Facial Massage

We can sometimes hold lots of tension within the face and in particular, around the jawline.  In labour it's important for a woman to be very relaxed and 'open' around the jaw as this relates to them feeling relaxed and open around the cervix.

Lower Back Massage

A very simple technique that can be applied with or without the use of massage oil.  Worthwhile practising at home prior to labour!

Stomach

Not all women like to have their stomachs touched during labour, though some find it very soothing and relaxing.  As with all of these massage techniques, practice is recommended and this can be a wonderful way for birth partners to bond with baby prior to the birth too!
